Amazon’s virtual assistant, Alexa, powers the smart speaker that keeps getting smarter each time. If you are the owner of Amazon Echo, then you must have the Alexa app. This is extremely important to set up your Echo device. The Alexa app is free and easily downloadable on a Smartphone, tablet, or any other device that is running on the iOS 9.0 or newer. Besides these, you can get the app on devices equipped with the Fire OS 3.0 or higher and the Android 5.0 or later.

Plug the Echo

Hook the device up to a power outlet by using the enclosed adapter to connect directly to the Echo. Power connectivity is indicated by a light ring on top of the device that turns blue. Alexa will prepare to greet you when the light turns orange and tells you that the device is ready for setup.

Network Capabilities

To connect your Echo device and Alexa to the Wi-Fi network, you can refer to the guide that accompanies the device. Launch the Alexa app to find your network and follow guides issued to set up the DOT. You can also set up multiple devices through the Alexa. From the menu, choose the ALEXA DEVICES option and then choose the name of the speaker that you wish to install. The state of the Wi-Fi connection can be perceived under the WIRELESS option. Save your Wi-Fi password into Amazon to connect to the smart home devices easily. Echo can also go into a public network without saving the password into Amazon. Use a dual band 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz Wi-Fi network with 802.11a / b / g / n standards.

  • Open the Alexa app to select SETTINGS -> SET UP A NEW DEVICE
  • For an already existing setup simply click on SETTINGS and then UPDATE WI-FI
  • Hold the ACTION button on the Echo till you see an orange light ring
  • A list of Wi-Fi networks is seen on the app as the mobile connects to the Echo
  • You have the option to connect the device manually as well. For this, you can follow instructions available on the Alexa App
  • Select ADD A NETWORK or RESCAN if you are unable to see your Wi-Fi network
  • Alternatively, if you are able to visualize your Wi-Fi network name, click on it and enter your passkey
  • Finally, click on CONNECT and you will see a confirmation message displayed on your mobile screen


Scroll down on this screen until you see the MAC address if you need to add your Alexa device to your router’s list of approved devices

When you connect a new Alexa device to the same Wi-Fi network any Wi-Fi passwords saved during setup automatically appear. You can actually choose to save them on to Amazon.
